21 Qualities to Cultivate for Spiritual Awakening Part 3

To be aware is to be enlightened. The whole purpose of life itself is to live life moment to moment. - Sri Bhagavan

What are the qualities we can develop which will assist with spiritual awakening/enlightenment into connection with all life? I described qualities 6 – 10 in a previous article (see link below).

The following describe qualities 11 - 15 to cultivate for spiritual awakening. I will give the remaining qualities in a last article.

11. Humility - Do you think that you understand everything? Do you lack humility? Grace requires humility, then you’re receptive to receive spiritual awakening.

To become fit to receive grace, we must develop humility in our words and actions. Amma Bhagavan

12. Sacredness – Have you lost the feeling of sacredness towards life? If you desire, ask for the mystery of sacredness to enter your life. The Native Americans approached all life as sacred.

We often keep ourselves from truly living and experiencing the greatest realms of being a human animal on this wild, amazing, sacred planet. - Julia Butterfly Hill, Activist who lived in a California Redwood for 738 days to prevent loggers cutting the tree down

13. Seeing the Divine/Spirit in Your Life – Awareness, moment to moment, leads to spiritual awakening. This awareness includes all life and nature outside you and also everything within you.

Spirit is an invisible force made visible in all life. -Maya Angelou

To be aware is all there is. To be aware is to have the presence in you. As your awareness deepens, the presence deepens. And there comes a point when you are so intensely aware that the presence is almost completely there. The presence is what you call God. -Sri Bhagavan

14. Develop a Bond with the Divine – Do you feel a connection to the Divine? Ask for a stronger connection? The stronger you make your connection to your personal aspect of the Divine, then the greater the possibility of the flow of Divine Grace of awakening through you.

The word enlightenment … is simply your natural state of felt oneness with Being (the Divine). Eckhart Tolle

15. Faith – Do you believe spiritual awakening will never happen to you? Become aware of your lack of faith. Statistics show awakening has occurred for 10’s of 1000’s already.

Enlightenment is very possible for the ordinary individual. Actually, it is easier than for someone who thinks that they are special. Sri Ravi Shankar

Ponder This: Whatever the present moment contains, accept is as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it. Make it your friend and ally, not your enemy. This will miraculously transform your whole life. - Eckhart Tolle

Don't Use Your Problems and Your Suffering to Define You

Tip 27 Don’t use your problems and your suffering to define you

“Who would we be without your story?” -Byron Katie, Spiritual Teacher and Author of Loving What Is

It is very easy to get attached to problems and the suffering you experience with them and use them as a pillar of your identity. I have done that. I am a depressive. I am ill.  I am a loser. I’ll never amount to much. Often, in hidden ways, we can be afraid not to have the problem anymore.

Who would you be without your problems?

Your ego is always a mish mash of ideas about who you are, but you may be scared to let them go because you have related to people through your problems. Your problems have served a purpose and can become great excuses not to show up.

I used to say to myself, You can’t expect me to show up with the lack of love and encouragement I had growing up…………

Give up the comfort of stories and limits. It can be very easy to argue for our limitations – we can easily be right that we cannot do something and that it is beyond us. But then we don’t have to risk, we will just never know. And whilst we won’t have made any big mistakes or got anything wrong, we will also know on a deep level that we missed out on the promise of adventure that our own life offered us. Being right about what you can’t do is a pale substitute for the experience of deep fulfilment that is on offer. Don’t rob yourself of the adventure of realising your own potential.

Freedom project: You actually don’t know who you’d be without your problems. Be willing to find out. I think you’ll like it. Try on some new identities and see how they might fit for you.

What You Don’t Know CAN Harm You ~ Confessions of an Ex-Sun-Sign Columnist

As a therapist and astrologer who has helped clients problem-solve since the 1970’s, I brought a soul-serving attitude to my “Good Heavens!” columns, Sun-sign forecasts, and radio and TV shows from the 1980s to 2002. I also freelance-wrote for several syndicated Sun-Sign columns, helping people navigate the cosmic energies afoot, if only on a superficial level. I liked showing the public that Astrology could be a force for good as a source of insight. I was also teaching astrology to more committed students through my Cape Ann School of Astrology.

Yet a sour note tied to some of my former Astro-employers lingers, rearing its head whenever someone asks me if I will confirm a scary Online (or emailed) astrology forecast – as happened again recently, and caused her to make an appointment with me for a full chart consultation to clear up her confusion. My chagrin goes back to what I can call my worst experience with an editor.

I was writing for 3 publishers, meeting every deadline. I liked the work well enough, although it could be tedious. Then came the shock. One editor told me that she did not care if the text correlated with real astrological data as long as it was submitted on time. As far as she was concerned, I could pull my Sun-sign messages out of a hat with no authentic cosmic connections to it or my readers. And I was obliged never to reveal this to anyone if I wanted to keep writing!

That was unconscionable to me. I kept on giving readers authentic interpretations of the daily planetary outlook, with my heart saddened to know that other writers were being paid to fabricate and disrespect the astrology I knew and loved.

Most editors I have known are wonderful persons of integrity, who give readers true value, so this was a sad exception. If you follow daily horoscope interpretations – as millions do – please know that while Sun-sign columns may offer advice based on sound astrological principles, not all do. Since you may never know which is which, don’t let your day be ruined by a comment you read in a Sun-sign column.

If you want to know how you are uniquely enmeshed in the planetary realm, based on your birth date, time and place, find a reputable Astrologer; interview him or her by phone to make sure s/he is a fit for you. A good astrological consult will give you more peace of mind than you had before the session.

Blessings,
Amy

Please Keep Me from Taking Myself too Seriously

I spent some time on Facebook recently and commented with what I thought was an interesting fact in relation to someone’s post about Henry David Thoreau. In the original post there is a statement by Thoreau about walking in the woods versus cutting down the forest. My post commented that Henry and a friend accidentally burned down 300 acres of Walden Woods. I just thought it was interesting and not something that a lot of people know about him.

The poster then commented that the operative word was accidentally. I probably should have said oh, well and left it alone. But, I posted and said something about maybe he was coming from regret about the incident. That resulted in another serious statement from the poster.

My thought was oh, please. I have not replied to that comment and will not. It already took up more of my time and thoughts than it should have. I suppose I possibly do not give Henry David Thoreau icon status (yes, he was a great thinker and a leading light of the Transcendentalists) as many people do. I did refrain from commenting that I was told that all the time he was living in his cabin at Walden Pond that his mother and sister did his laundry. So much for his being self-sufficient while living at Waldon Pond.

Okay, I understand that I have now strayed a bit from the point, which is the title of my post—please keep me from taking myself too seriously. Or maybe at the very least as a first step, please keep me from taking Facebook too seriously.

That leads to the question, are there other things that I am taking too seriously that do not deserve as much time and thought as I am giving them? The next step is recognizing when that is happening and giving up the need to be overly serious. It seems that there is always work to do.

Listen to the Divinely Inspired Music of Philip Wesley

Part of my daily spiritual practice is to meditate for 15 minutes twice a day and read a Lesson from A Course in Miracles. In one meditation, usually at the beginning of the day, I'll sit completely quiet. Before I go to bed, I'll do a 15 minute meditation with music from Pandora's Calm Meditation station.

I remember when I first heard the music of Philip Wesley. I was listening to the Calm Meditation station while waiting for a 10 PM Jet Blue flight from San Diego to Boston. It was stressful week in the paradise of San Diego, and I needed to cool down. The company I was working for as an Interim Controller announced massive lay offs at the location where I was working and people were lined up in my office in sheer panic. The Universe in uncanny. When they want to do massive re-directs in people's lives, they send a consultant who happens to be a student of A Course in Miracles. I've been through this many times.

While waiting for my weekly flight back to Boston on a Friday night, I found a seat at an empty gate. I booted up Pandora, put my ear buds in, closed my eyes and waited for the relaxation to begin. All of sudden a song came on which gave me the chills! I stopped my meditation. Opened my eyes and looked at my Blackberry to see what this amazing song was called. It was called Dark Night of the Soul by Philip Wesley. How ironic seeing as I had left behind a lot of people who were experiencing a serious Dark Night of the Soul. I gave the song a thumbs up on Pandora and went back into meditation. During my subsequent meditations, I noticed I would get the chills every time a Philip Wesley song came on. His music is that powerful.

To me, his music feels divinely inspired and otherworldly...like it came from a place familiar yet deeply emotional.

When I listen to a Philip Wesley song, I feel like I'm the one playing the piano....even though I have no idea how to play the piano. It's like I'm able to step into his Spirit and feel the keys so much so my fingers start moving as if was I was playing.

If you want an amazing meditation experience, be transported into a musical painting by Philip Wesley where you and the music are one. Listen and experience what a higher vibration sound feels like.

Recognize that Resistance Can Be Really Nasty

Tip 26 Recognise that resistance can be really nasty.

“As we move closer to our core, our hidden beliefs that live in the shadows and secretly call the shots become exposed. They try to convince the ego to bring out the heavy artillery and initiate a take-no-prisoners fight to the finish. What recourse do we have during this dark night of the soul? Let the ego fight. And while it's distracted with its business, let's take every opportunity to go within, to go deeper than ever before, until we're in heaven." -Tami Coyne and Karen Weissman

It is easy to lapse into thinking that resistance really isn’t so bad, that it is just a few unloving and unkind thoughts. You should not create grandiosity from resistance either, making it into some unbeatable monster that you feel completely victimised by.

The reality is that resistance can be very, very nasty. It will lead you into shame, addictions, self-destructive and self-sabotaging behaviour. It can take you to hell. But there are forces in you that are much greater than resistance. The power of your heart, the pull of love, your generosity, the desire to serve your fellow brothers and sisters is greater than resistance.

I believe that there are angels and daimons watching over you, shouting “Grow, evolve, become!” But you must understand that you are in a battle, and a battle that you can win. When you underestimate or deny the power of resistance, it can flatten you and you won’t even have seen it coming. So don’t be either too naïve or too cynical – resistance is nasty, but with awareness, courage, skill and perseverance, you will beat it.

Freedom project: Take resistance both seriously and lightly. You are in a battle and you can win. But it is a battle.

21 Qualities to Cultivate for Spiritual Awakening Part 2

Individual transformation would bring about a global transformation. When we say this, we do not mean the world is going to change. What we are saying is people are going to change as individuals inwardly. -Amma Bhagavan

What are the qualities we can develop which will assist with spiritual awakening into connection with all life?
I described qualities 1 – 5 in a previous article

21 Qualities to Cultivate for Spiritual Awakening Part 1

The following describe qualities 6 - 10 to cultivate for spiritual awakening. I will give the remaining qualities in subsequent articles.

6. Inner Integrity - Practice being honest with yourself. Lack of integrity increases separation between us and others. It increases separation from our authentic inner self. It increases our suffering.

Inner integrity is to see what is going on inside you without the mind justifying things. - Sri Amma Bhagavan

7. Life Review – Review your life. See how you affected others and your shortcomings.

To offer no resistance to life is to be in a state of grace, ease, and lightness. - Eckhart Tolle

8. Confront Your Fears – Fear arises when we see in our minds a threat to ourselves, or a thought of failure, the future, rejection, or the unknown.

So the single most vital step on your journey toward enlightenment is this: learn to dis-identify with your mind. Every time you create a gap in the stream of mind the light of your consciousness grows stronger. - Eckhart Tolle

9. Accept Yourself – To awaken spiritually, accept your level of present development you experience at the present moment. In addition, learn from your mistakes and do better next time.

Don't label anything as good or bad. That's why you suffer, that's what stops you from being optimistic. Accept yourself and everything in you. - Byron Katie

10. Stop Craving For Importance – Become aware of your need for importance as it arises. How does this need create separation?

All cravings are the mind seeking salvation or fulfillment in external things and in the future as a substitute for the joy of Being. - Eckhart Tolle

3 Ways to Help Spiritual Awakening:

· Practice each quality in your daily life whenever possible.

· Become aware of qualities you lack.

· Pray to the Divine for these qualities.

Ponder This:

See if you can catch yourself complaining in either speech or thought, about a situation you find yourself in, what other people do or say... To complain is always non acceptance of what is... When you complain, you make yourself a victim. Leave the situation or accept it. All else is madness. - Eckhart Tolle
