Recognize the Difference Between an Obstacle and an Excuse

Tip 28 Recognise the difference between an obstacle and an excuse

"Excuses are nothing more than lies that fear have sold you." -Carmen Bell, South African Entrepreneur

Resistance knows that it can use anything to hold you back. It can easily blur the distinction between a problem and an obstacle. How do you tell the difference?

When you are thrown a problem, if you truly want to solve the problem, you will find ways through. You will seek solutions. But I have known many people (myself included), that when you offer them solutions to their problems, are very willing to tell you why that won’t work, or will very quickly generate another bigger and juicier problem.

The ego pulls out its clipboard and takes great pride in saying, “OK, that was a very good idea, now let me give you 27 very clear reasons why it won’t work.”

The ego needs to be right. When you are inspired you will find a thousand ways to take action, but when you are afraid, you will find a thousand excuses. Remember, Lance Armstrong won several Tour de France cycle races while suffering from cancer. Leo Tolstoy had 13 children and still wrote War and Peace (or maybe because he had 13 children!).

I am not suggesting for a moment that you berate yourself, but I do want to remind you of what you are capable of when you are truly aligned and inspired.

Freedom project: Be honest with yourself about your fears. Shift from making excuses to being aware and acknowledging your fear and then take a courageous step instead.
