Tip 24 - Art, Callings and Addiction
“Addiction becomes the evil twin of our calling to service or to art. That’s why addicts are so interesting and so boring at the same time. They’re interesting because they’re called to something–something new, something unique, something that we, watching, can’t wait to see them bring forth into manifestation. At the same time, they’re boring because they never do the work.” -Steven Pressfield
Addiction is a form of resistance. I have had several friends who have been on 12-step recovery programmes tell me that when they got into recovery, they realised that they got into an addiction because some new and exciting creative project beckoned them and they got scared.
Addictions keep you going around in a circle, often self-destructively. It never arrives at its destination. The circular nature of addiction is what makes it so excruciating. No traction is ever gained, no progress is ever made. We’re stuck on the same endlessly-repeating track.
Tip: Trace back to what was going on just before the addiction?
You break out of addictions by a combination of willingness, grace and spiritual fellowship.
Freedom project: Be honest with yourself about what addictive behaviour you may have that is stopping you from being your best. Do you need some help to get past your addiction?
