Tip 18 - Own your fear so it doesn’t own you
“People ask me to teach them how they can be fearless, and I answer by telling them that I can’t teach them that, but I can teach them how to have fear and do their creative work anyway.” Julia Cameron, Author of the Artists Way
When you are afraid of your fears and keep them at a distance, they have a power over you. They have you. You live your life constrained by them, denying them, trying to control them or defending against them.
When you can maturely own and name your fears, they begin to lose their power. Fear breeds by staying hidden and unnamed. Owned and named, fear is less powerful.
When you can say clearly to yourself, “I am afraid of being shamed or humiliated, I am afraid of going broke, I am afraid I won’t finish this project, I am afraid no-one will buy my book or I am afraid that I won’t find clients for my business,” then you take back your power. That is the key: feel the fear and do it anyway.
Resistance loves it when you wait for your fear to subside because it knows that there is unlikely to be a fear free day. But resistance hates it when you act in the face of your fear, because it knows it has lost some control over you. Resistance hates courage.
Freedom project: Write a list of your fears, all of them. Own them without feeling bad. “I am afraid of….” And then choose to act anyway.
