Have Long Term Goals

Note: This article is one in series of tips from Inspired Entrepreneur Nick Williams

Tip 16 - Have long-term goals

It is very important to generate a good attitude, a good heart, as much as possible. From this, happiness in both the short term and the long term for both yourself and others will come.” Dalai Lama

I have been continually inspired by one of our alumni with whom I have worked over a number of years. Cali Bird shared with me eleven years ago that she had many dreams and long-term goals. Two specific ones were: to have a book published, and to share a speaking stage with me.

In January 2011, she published her first book entitled Don’t Give Up Your Day Job, and on 12th April 2011, we presented an evening talk together for the Inspired Entrepreneur London audience.

As she shared some of her experiences that evening, she talked about how that night was the fulfilment of those two of her long term goals.

In truth, you never know whether the time, love and energy you invest in projects are going to create the success that, in your mind, you want them to create. Although this is the seventh book I have written, there are probably twenty books that I have started and not finished over the years.

You need to invest creatively to learn and grow. You may write three books that don’t get published in order to develop the skill and flair that will get the fourth published and touch a nerve with people.

Investing energy in projects is an act of faith. But I don’t think it is ever wasted. Whatever the outcomes, you will learn something, even if it is “How to make every mistake under the sun.” Making all those mistakes may then open the doorway to success for you. There will always be a gift and a blessing, when you are willing to see it.

Freedom project: Have a long term vision of who you want to become and what you want to contribute. That vision will pull you forward through the challenging times.
