I went for a walk this morning. I walked to the local bead store from my home. I believe that it is between a 2-1/2 to 3 mile walk round trip. I do not really think about the distance or having achy muscles and joints when I arrive home. But, whenever I think about possibly walking to the local health food store, I say to myself that I know that I can walk there but I am not sure about getting home easily. The truth is, it's about a 3 mile round trip to the health food store.
I thought about this difference in my thinking about walking similar distances on my walk to the bead store. I realized that I know that I can sit at the bead store and work on a project. I usually think that I would walk to the health food store and turn right around after purchasing my items and walk home. I realized this morning that I could sit on the stool next to the counter and rest for a bit.The owners are lovely people and would understand about my wanting to sit and chat for a short while. On top of that, there are two coffee shops between the store and home where I could hang out for a bit if I needed to. And, thinking about it, I may very well not need to stop anywhere on the way home from the health food store.
My ultimate realization was that I had created a limitation for myself that did not exist and have no idea why I created this limit or where this idea came from. So, how many other unnecessary limits do I create for myself? Hopefully I will actually walk to the health food store the next time I need a few things. As important, if not more important, I also hope that I will continue to recognize self-limiting thoughts and work to dissolve those as well.
