Over the weekend, I took my car to a local tire shop and spent over an hour sitting on oil stained waiting room seats watching ESPN, which I could care less about. I finally found the remote, pressed mute and started reading the new book I had just picked up at Barnes and Noble…Choice Point – Align Your Purpose by Harry Massey and David Hamilton.
Immediately, the book caught my attention as I started reading about communicating and aligning with the current energy patterns in the Universe to flow into my life purpose. I was intrigued. I thought I had overdosed on books about finding a life purpose, but these authors had a new twist using quantum physics concepts (entanglement and the observer effect) to form new patterns or fractals. They made me think about my own life path and asked if I liked where I was going or if I wanted to move in a new direction.
The term Choice Point is borrowed from physics. The authors say, “It is a place of branching or forking. It is a point of possibility. We can also think of it as a fork that creates another road. The idea behind Choice Point is that we can choose which of those two roads to travel down. If we make the same choices that we have made in the past, then we will choose the road that will lead us to the same problems, only on a larger scale.”
You can tell when you’re at a Choice Point. Your life starts making noises—like my car. First pings, then clunks, then break down if you choose not to listen. Or maybe it won’t break down. Maybe you’ll just go on doing what you’ve always done with the same ole clunker of a fractal life pattern you’ve created for yourself. If you want change, then read on.
The book is arranged into three sections: Part 1-Understand Your World which about understanding cycles and patterns in your personal life and those on a global scale. The next section is called Align Your Purpose, which takes you to the next level. Once you observe the cycles and patterns in your own life and in the world, the book talks about the importance of aligning with theses cycles so you can provide the services you came her to perform. Finally, Part 3 is called Be the Change where you step into your power to effect positive change in the world. Think of it as Observation, Commitment, and Action to align with your life purpose.
The authors interviewed people most would think lead successful lives such as John Paul DeJoria, Richard Branson, and Peter Buffet. Rather than just a How to Find Your Life Purpose concept book, the authors let these people tell their own story about how they became the change they wanted to see.
There’s nothing like a true story that holds my attention.
As I was reading, the mechanic told me my car was ready. He informed that he balanced my tires but I should think about getting some new ones and provided me with an estimate for $800.00. Ugh.
I drove away and noticed the problem wasn’t resolved with just balancing. Maybe he was right. I thought. Maybe it’s time for tires with new treads. I equated the experience of tire balancing with a massage. A massage might feel good for a little while but it doesn’t really fix the underlying problem.
I called around for tire prices and ended up in the waiting room of another tire shop continuing to read my book. I was told, “We can put new tires on your car but you need an alignment."
I told him I just had them balanced. “Doesn’t matter,” he said. “We’re putting on new tires. We can balance them but what you really need is an alignment.”
There’s that word again, I thought.
“What’s the difference?” I asked (clearly more of an accountant/writer rather than a tire/car girl).
“An alignment measures and adjusts the suspension of the vehicle to set the direction the wheels point and the angle of contact with the road and how these change when turning. Suspensions that are not adjusted properly can cause excessive tire wear and reduced control of the vehicle. This condition can be both annoying and unsafe.”
Interesting, I thought. Essentially he was telling me I need to point the wheels of my life in a new direction. Otherwise, life will become annoying and unsafe.
He went on, “Balancing spins the wheel to make sure the wheel and tire assembly does not have a heavy spot. Things that spin fast but are not balanced can vibrate violently. This is can be annoying and unsafe. In some cases, it can cause the wheel to fall off.”
Sounds like the romantic relationship I was dealing with where the wheels were about to the fall off because we hit a heavy spot. We weren’t vibrating violently yet but that could be the next step if we continued with the same pattern.
I wondered, Is it worse to be out of balance or out of alignment? I was at a Choice Point in the road.
Thinking I wanted to align myself with the experience of having a safe ride to work, I conceded and went for the full package, “Go ahead. Balance and align me.”
While I waited, I asked myself, Are you aligned with the things, people, energy you want to attract in your life? Are you participating in the current world cycle by providing a service in alignment with your life purpose?
In some ways Yes, in some ways No. Honestly, I have one foot in both worlds—my past cycle and my current cycle. Somewhere along the way, there was a shift in my life purpose and only half of me was willing to go along with it and my vehicle was reflecting this.
Overall, I loved the book but I have to admit, the last three chapters hit a speed bump and didn’t keep my attention through to the end. I think the book slipped out of balance at that point. But overall, Choice Point is definitely worth reading and aligning with.
