Release the Anger - Oprah's Super Soul Sunday Discussion

Oprah had a wonderful discussion with author Elizabeth Lessor, the author of Broken Open - How Difficult Time Can Help Us Grow on one her Super Soul Sundays. They talked about anger and what it does to your life when you hold onto it. I took notes and would like to share them with you.

We’re Angry with People Closest to Us

Anger is fear which is the opposite of love. We may feel fear because we trusted someone. We felt comfortable with them and they us down. What we’re really afraid of is fear of abandonment. Fear of being judged…fear that what they think of us may be right.

Fighting life is the opposite of the spiritual instinct…which is love.

Judgment is a Tool the Ego Uses

We are connected to all living things. When we judge others, we judge ourselves. Judgment is fear which is the opposite of love. The ego uses judgment to feel superior which is release fear disguised. By bringing ourselves back into the present moment, the fear/anger/judgment disappears. You can’t be angry and be present at the same time.

Invite the Hurt In and Release It

Since you can’t be angry and be present at the same time, anger must be in the past. To make peace with the past, look at it and own the pain. When we get present, we become the observer. When we acknowledge the pain, it no longer owns us. Anger disappears when we’re present.

Forgive and Let Go

We may be present but unless we forgive and release the past, the same issue may come up for us again at a later date. Not dealing with the anger allows the person we’re angry with to steal another day from us. Each moment you feel anger is a stolen moment from your life. Don’t allow others to steal your energy. Until you heal the wounds of the past, you bleed into the future.

We release the past through forgiveness. Forgive yourself first, then forgive and release the person you’re angry with. Forgiveness is not for the person who offended you. It’s to release yourself from the experience of fear so you can move forward to experience positive things in your life. You will feel a lightness which means you are in the present moment ready for a new and better experience.

By getting the obstacles (anger) out of the way, we are can experience life fully.

When you let go, you feel the presence of God.

The spiritual experience lets you know that no matter what happens in your life, everything will be OK. Anger or sadness when dealing with a loss of a job, a death or loss of a marriage, allows our hearts to open during those times. We’re open to a new beginning…new experiences.

When we let go…we let new things flow into our lives.

Pay Attention to Your Life. You Are an Energy Field

Oprah often reminds us that we are a walking energy field. When you walk into a room and you’re mad or sad, you are bringing that energy to other people. Do you really want to do that? Venting briefly with friends is one thing. We’re all human and have rugged days. But to stay there and be angry and upset all the time is what I call a Pig Pen person (Charlie Brown character with dirty that swirls around him). When they walk into a room, they slime the rest of us with bad vibes. Don’t be an energy Pig Pen. Vent, then find something to feel good about to raise your vibration. Be aware that you are an energy field.
